Frontline

Frontline is probably the most well shot show news program on tv. Most of their stories are document heavy and they have to "invent" most of their b-roll. I especially like (and have stolen liberally) the "superslow-push with out of focus foreground" shots. They also do creative stuff with documents, stuff I would like to try to copy once we get our new editing setup.

They also are using shots before one might normally use them. That is to say, they use the shot set-up or camera adjustment, or a whip pan for various effect.

The Tank Man episode is a really great example of this.

They start out the show with stylized, ominous video of tiananman square. The tripod is unlocked and the camera whip pans, with a nat cue of the 1989 video. It's jarring and effective.

The new episode, Bush's War has one of my favorite shots though. In part one, chapter 5, at 3:44 is, I think, a great shot. It's just a simple push on a helicopter through the trees. The combination of the push through the trees, with the lens flare from the sun, and the smooth motion is almost magical.

This is a compilation show of all their Iraq shows, the first time they used this shot, they just used the push part. Here, they use the shot set up too, which is sort of informative and kinda cool to see. This episode is 4 hours, but it's got all their best stuff since the war began.

Bullet Story

This story turned out pretty good, I like the close-ups of the bullet with the light behind it. I could have gone the extra step and used another light, possibly moving and with a zoom while holding the bullet, maybe that'd be too much?

Pass Story

Typical pass story, but I like the transition at :42. I got the second shot first, and wasn't really planning on putting a shot in front of it... But at our live location it was snowing and KIRO had their 1K on and I used that..

Video Janitor

Last two "Problem Solver" stories of the book. We had to throw these together at the last minute. We're expected to have high production value on every story so I worked hard to get variety of shots to "visualize" the stories. It was decided early on that we would shoot the interviews, have the reporter write, then discuss how to visualize them. Don't usually do it this way, but I've found on visually poor stories it's easier to see the script then I can shoot accordingly. Now you get the video janitor part. After editing and many layers of video later, the stories turned out interesting and easy to watch. You decide....

"We'll Remember You"

What I thought was going to be a vosot turned into a pkg. I was sent to Tacoma at 4:57pm at the peak of traffic. I get there 15 minutes late but it is not that big of a deal for it started late. So...by myself...I am off shooting a pkg. Best of all...they turned off all the lights in the room! Just GREAT for video! They should have just blown out the candles too! After Marlees attempt at three different stories with Adam she was now on her way down. Marlee showed up in Tacoma at around 9:45 or so. The event did not start till 7:30 (was going to start at 7pm) and the only thing worth shooting started around 9:15. So for 45 minutes I watched people eat their hearts out. I snuck in a desert or two to hold me over but the sight of main course made me cringe. Another night with no lunch. So...in a crunch but we got it done. Took about 15 or so minutes to edit the pkg. Oh and as for the liveshot...I chose sticks! What were we going to "show"?

Marlee did a great job ripping out the story the best she could. Not her fault that three other stories she was working on fell through. I also love it when a reporter says "put nats in where you want". So I did! DING!
